How can I build a career in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations department?

Alice asked:

I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and am fluent in Russian (have lived in Russia for several years), and am wondering what steps I can take to build a career investigating human trafficking with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement? Obviously, any job in law enforcement would help, but are there any other paths to such a career? More importantly, how difficult is it to get into such a field?

How do police investigators find past employment? Are they able to find current employment for current year?

Ry Guy asked:

I showed inconclusive on pre-employment drug test and was not hired for job in 2008. I was paid a bit for a one day training that I attended, but no more. Can the police background check find out about this if it is not on my application? I was never employed as the test showed inconclusive. I wanted to retest but they were going to make me pay for it. Found different job instead. Any ideas out there? Preferably from someone with applicable experience?
