What happens if you lie about previous employment?

Allie asked:

My boss is very pushy and would not allow any of her THREE employers to quit without a fight.

Basically, I’m thinking of just quitting. However, I don’t think she’d have great things to say about me if a potential employer called her.

I thought of getting around that situation by not listing that job as previous employment.

What are the downfalls of doing so?

Please and thank you for answers!

What information is a previous employer legally allowed to release regarding your employment with them?

M. Anthony asked:

This question applies to the state of California.

I have been told that employers are only allowed to confirm dates of employment, nothing more, such as the nature of your departure from the company. I want to know if this is true, and to what extent.

The reason for asking this question is, I want to know whether or not the fact I was fired from a company will hinder my future employment.
