Your hubby will need an ID of some sort. Most states have the ability to provide a state ID that is not related to a driver’s license.

Obviously, any job that is related to driving is out. If his “criminal background” is felony related, he will have a harder time getting a job (because he has to admit the felony), but if he shows that he is willing and able to work someone will pick him up.

Have him apply for jobs that are suited to his MOS from the service. Play up the fact that he was in the military and that he has a degree. There is no “real” reason that he can’t hold a job like everyone else.

He needs to be diligent and make sure that he follows through on everything that is asked of him. No slacking, calling in sick, etc. until he has a good standing with whomever hires him.

Unless he *has* to admit the criminal background, tell him to stay quiet about it — especially if it’s a misdemeanor. Many times a misdemeanor is not even considered or problematic unless it’s mentioned.

Since he is a veteran, have him contact military services about job placement. Even with a criminal background they may be able to assist.

Short-order cook, or a server. Maybe a dish washer or a bus boy. I know a few people that have criminal back grounds and they have worked their way into management positions. Maybe he could work for a landscaper, or get a job on a construction site, or possibly laying concrete.They make OK money,the only thing about that is, it’s hard work.

Some kind of self-employment or work for someone who has fewer than 25 employees (they usually don’t do background checks). I hope he learned something. There is a difference between a mistake and willful misconduct. Good luck to him (and you).

The ID is going to be very difficult – with no license, most employers won’t consider him due to the fear of transportation reliability. If he has some sort of military ID, that would be helpfu. (Passports are good too.) If he has a criminal background, he will have to disclose it honestly on the form. As you probably know, do NOT falsify the application – most employers will do a criminal background check. If he is honest, and gets to the interview, honesty maybe the best approach. Be open about what it was and the issues. If the issues happened some time ago, this is better than if they happened, for example, last year. Good luck – it will be a difficult journey
